MUSIC By | Wavy Warrior

Toronto's own Goodnight Cassius is a name that should be on every R&B fan's radar. This rising star is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. Goodnight Cassius, real name Jonah, has been building up his catalog with a string of monthly releases since the start of 2023.

His latest track, "Ready Or What," is a soulful tune that showcases Goodnight Cassius's smooth, velvety voice. The song's 30-second preview promises a captivating listening experience, with lush instrumentals and heartfelt lyrics.

Goodnight Cassius draws inspiration from real-life experiences and aims to convey emotion and themes of identity that feel authentic and genuine. The artist's creative process is melody-first, and he often writes lyrics by typing out everyday sentences and then whittling them down to their essential core. For Goodnight Cassius, it's crucial that his music makes him feel amazing first, and he hopes that listeners will connect with the truth he puts into every track.

We tapped in with the artist to learn more about the inspiration behind his name, his creative process, and the message he hopes listeners will take away from his music - here’s what he had to say:

Where did you get the name "Goodnight Cassius"?

It's funny actually, there was a little kid named Cassius my friend would babysit and she would bring him to my highschool basketball tournaments. The name just sounded cool, you know what I mean? Like a 'boy-wonder' type of vibe. So it stuck with me ever since. And when I had to put a name to these songs, it popped back up. I added "Goodnight" because it felt too naked by itself in my opinion. So, voila.

How would you describe the music you typically create nowadays ?

Based on a real story, haha. It always comes from something that happened or I felt. More importantly my music has to make me feel amazing first or is a space that holds a feeling that I can tangibly interact with and come back to.

What is your creative process like, especially in your most recent projects ?

I'm a melody-first artist, for sure. That's what pulls me into a new song everytime. But to write lyrics I find it easier to just type an everyday sentence first, like I'm texting myself or journaling. From there it's a process of elimination. Sometimes you start from scratch again. If I'm lucky, the lyrics just write themselves.

What Is The Message You Wish Listeners To Take Away From The Tracks ?

I can only hope that the lyrics connect with them and the melody & production moves them. I want them to see the truth I put in these songs in their own lives. Each offering I give is a celebration of music and I'm truly grateful to anyone who shares my music.
