Geneva Lei's new single "Tell Me" is a testament to her evolving sound and approach to songwriting. The song tells a story about a heartbreak, but with a twist - it's all about having fun with friends and dancing it off. Geneva's aim was to focus on herself and the support she receives from her friends during tough times, sending a message of empowerment to her listeners.

We had a conversation with Geneva to discover more about her sources of inspiration, artistic approach, and the key message she intends to convey through her music - this is what she shared with us:

How would you describe the music you typically create nowadays?

I feel like I’m starting to become more honest in my song writing. I had a breakthrough when I wrote my song Problematic. After that, I didn’t care if it was going to hurt anyone’s feelings or mine even. I realized that my music is mine, I have the right to say how I feel and be honest about it. I have also been really into real instruments lately. I still like to incorporate hip-hop or pop aspects to my R&B/Soul sounds, but I think there’s so much character when you use real guitar strings, drums, ETC. In my single Tell Me, Mamic and Slim really focused on the drums and bassline for this single because we just to make sure the sounds hit in the listeners ears just like the lyrics. It was a fun process to build this song with them so, I’m excited to explore this side of my music for future drops.

What is your creative process like, especially in your most recent projects?

The best advice I’ve ever gotten was to focus on making sure the music was the priority. When you have a beautiful track or project, it’s really easy to build a world or story around it. With Tell Me, Mamic, Slim and I started with a loop and ended up building the sound around it. We went with a “live” sounding direction because we thought it gave a good fun and vibrant feeling. Had vocals mixed by Paul Tonks and then when I got the final mix, I played it 1000 times to plan how I want to tell this story through my visuals. The feeling it gave me was that I was having fun with my girls talking about the man who’s playing with my time, us just dancing it off and really getting it off my chest. I wanted the main focus for this track to be about me and how I’m surrounded by so much support during a heartbreak.
