KEYZ VANGOs New EP, LATE is a Genre-Bending, Summer Classic.

Music by | Wavy Warrior

Listening to this EP was a pleasant surprise that I wasn’t ready for, the way Keyz carefully orchestrated directed and executed a sonic experience, infused with Hip-Hop, R&B, and experimental melodies, before you know it you’re caught up in the vibe riding the melody along with Vango himself waiting for the perfect opportunity to bump this on a summer day you know is about to be lit. I can’t lie this album is already a gem for me and if you don’t have at least one or two tracks off of this on your summer night’s playlist then you’re just slacking on yourself. From the intro all the way to “ELECTRIK CHAIR”, the interlude and “LOMO” I honestly couldn’t even tell you which track was my favourite because I can’t help but listen to the whole EP from the front to back. Trust me you don’t want to be late to this vibe right next door because were tapped into this frequency and were gonna be vibing LATE, with KEYZ VANGO, if you’re not convinced tap into his frequency below.

Here’s more from Vango himself,

How would you describe the music you typically create nowadays?

I feel like the goal with everything I make is authenticity first and foremost. Lyrically and musically I'm telling familiar stories we all may have experienced at some point, but I always search for the in-between details of how to tell those stories differently from a dramatic vulnerability.

What is your creative process like, especially in your most recent project?

LATE, came together in pieces little by little over the course of about a year in 2020. In the beginning, it was really fragments of different thoughts and questions scattered throughout my notes app on my phone, combined with random in-the-moment voice memos of melodies. Some of the melodies I would be freestyling out loud at home into my phone over some pieces of beats and vibes I was working on from my laptop and some of them I would record on the spot in the studio if I happened to be there at the moment of inspiration. With the world being shut down due to Covid I was really forced to slow down and look myself in the mirror to try to figure out who I am. I think that's really when I learned how to capture and trust some of those initial feelings at the moment, no matter where I was, it's really all I had left. Sometime last July, in between singing like 4 of my new demos in the shower, the whole vibe sort of clicked and I realized I had a body of work forming. From that point, I approached it like how I would assume a movie director would treat a film and started carving out those raw feelings into a storyline of what had happened in and around my life, and the rest all just fell into place.

What Is The Message You Wish Listeners To Take Away From The EP?

Growing up I moved A LOT and in most cases to complete opposite living environments so over the course of time I think I became a very well-rounded person, always adapting, in true Gemini fashion lol. But on the flip-side of that, I think it started to strip away a sense of identity and that quickly turned into a pattern of self-isolation and just overall not feeling like I was the ideal version of anything. The main thing I learned and want listeners to learn from this EP is that we should celebrate the journey of self-discovery by accepting our unique individuality and flaws in the process. Nobody is perfect, we make mistakes in trying to figure out how to not make mistakes and it's okay. We blow chances, we ruin good relationships and sometimes lose ourselves in the process of trying to be ideal. Perfection and the idea of perfect timing are subjective, what's important is that we learn to accept the imperfections, face fears and move past them eventually.
